Tarnac

Tarnac ( Tarnac in Occitan ) is a commune with 318 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011 ) in the department of Corrèze, in the Limousin region. The municipality is a member of the Association of Municipalities Bugeat - Sornac - Millevaches au Coeur. The inhabitants call themselves Tarnacois (it).

Geography

The municipality is located in the Massif Central on the Plateau de Millevaches and thus also in the Regional Natural Park Millevaches en Limousin at an altitude of 715 meters. The place is situated on the left bank of the upper reaches of the Vienne, a left tributary of the Loire. Tulle, prefecture of the department, is located about 60 kilometers south-west, Égletons about 40 kilometers south and Ussel about 40 kilometers southeast.

Neighboring communities of Tarnac are Faux-la -Montagne to the north, Peyrelevade in the east, in the southeast Meymac, Saint- Merd -les- Oussines the southeast, Bugeat in the south, Toy- Viam Viam and to the west and northwest Rempnat.

History

The name Tarnac comes from the Celtic-Roman -speaking countries and referred to the homestead ( Celtic suffix: acum ) and the owner of this property Tarinus, the homestead of Tarinus. So the name reflects a long history of settlement, which is detected as early as the first century BC by 27 grave hill between the Puy Besseau and the Grands -Champs.
