Târnava, Sibiu

Târnava (deprecated Prostea Mare; German United Probstdorf, Hungarian Nagyekemező ) is a municipality in the district of Sibiu in Transylvania, Romania.

Location

The village is located five kilometers south-west of Medias ( Medias ) located in the northern part of the Sibiu County, Riverfront Târnava Mare (Grand Kokel ).

History

In 1331 the village as Ekeemeza Maior was first mentioned. It is believed that the foundation of the settlement already much earlier - that is, before the settlement of the Saxons - probably done by Székely. First was Grand - Probstdorf part of the Hermannstadt province "Seven Chairs " before the end of the 18th century was brought under the Media shear chair.

The current Romanian village name was introduced in 1980 instead of the previously valid Prostea Mare.

Starting in the 1960s, but especially after the events of 1989 wandered the vast majority of the German population to Germany. She founded a " Home Town " ( HOG).

The municipality is located on the National Road "DN 14". In addition, the city with a stop at the electrified, international line 300 is connected to the rail network of the CFR.

Education, economic and social

Already in 1567 the existence of a school in Great Probstdorf is occupied. The town now has a kindergarten, a primary school and a secondary school.

The majority of the population is employed in agriculture, fruit growing, animal husbandry, trade and small industry.

Environmental situation

Due to its proximity to the neighboring Copşa Mica (Small Kopisch ) where a Rußfabrik and a ferrous metal are operating, which were especially in the 1980s in a disastrous state, the environment in Târnava today suffers considerably.
