History

The place name comes from the Gallo -Roman period (52 BC to 486) and consists of the name Tarinus and the Iberian syllable -os, " estate", so it means " estate of Tarinus ". However Tarnos was first mentioned in the 12th century. The fortified church of Tarnos was built in the 12th century, it was a Commandery of the Order of Malta. She was a focal point for pilgrims of St James, who used the Voie de Soulac, an alternative to the Via Turonensis.

Originally flowed the Adour from south to north through the city. The engineer and architect Louis de Foix ( 1530/1538-1602/1604 ) had built a dam that blocked the Adour to the north, so that the flow was passed directly into the sea. The new course of the river was inaugurated on October 28, 1578.

1855 station of Boucau was inaugurated, which was then still part of Tarnos. 1857 Boucau became independent. To 1883, the ironworks Forges de l' Adour were established, which led to an upswing in Tarnos. By 1963, the economic situation of the city was closely associated with the iron industry.
