Tarsomys

Tarsomys is a rodent species from the group of Altweltmäuse ( Murinae ). The genus includes two species.

There are rat-like rodent with a body length 14-18 centimeters and a 12 to 16 centimeters long tail. Your back is brown and her belly light brown or light gray. The ears are densely hairy, the hind feet are long and thin, the paws wear long, strong claws.

These rodents are native to the Philippines, where they occur on the island of Mindanao. Their habitat is forests, both in the lowlands and up to 2300 meters above sea level. You probably live on the ground and feed on small animals, which they dig out of the ground.

The two types are:

  • Tarsomys apoensis that has a soft coat and
  • Tarsomys echinatus whose fur is spiky.

The IUCN lists T. echinatus as threatened ( vulnerable ) as it is pulled strongly by habitat destruction affected. T. apoensis is not compromised.
