Taruga is a reference to the so-called Nok culture. The site is located about 40 km southeast of the Nigerian capital Abuja.

Excavations of the British archaeologist Bernard Fagg in the 1960s provided not only fragments of terra-cotta, but also the oldest dating for iron smelting in West Africa. Taruga was long the only reference of the Nok culture, which has been thoroughly described and documented.

A new research project at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main found several new ones are added.
