Tasos Zembylas

Tasos Zembylas (born 1962 ) is an Austrian philosopher and cultural theorist.

Life

Zembylas studied from 1991 to 1997 philosophy, art history and sociology at the University of Vienna. After obtaining the Master's degree, he was a Research Fellow at the International Research Center for Cultural Studies in Vienna. After completion of the doctoral program in philosophy, he worked as a freelance scientist. During this time he conducted several studies commissioned mainly in the field of vocational and educational research by and was a lecturer at the University of Vienna and at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, where he taught aesthetics and sociology of art. He was an assistant professor in 1999 and after his habilitation University Professor of Cultural Production Engineering at the Institute for Arts Management and Cultural Studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. In 2009 he was a visiting professor at Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen. In 2010 he moved to the Institute for Music Sociology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

Research

Zembylas ' focuses on culture management science, epistemology of practice, and public cultural funding.

An art basic philosophical question that followed Tasos Zembylas, revolves around the formation process of the concept of art. Zembylas approaches to this question by focusing not only on linguistic utterances and theories about contemporary art, but at least as much to the description and analysis of social negotiation processes and practices of the art world.

The close connection between art and social practice and culture between business and social structures deflected Zembylas ' attention to cultural, social, political and economic theories of the cultural sector. The aim his theoretical effort is therefore the development of an interdisciplinary access to the most important research issues of culture management science.

Besides the theoretically -term work Zembylas conducted several empirical studies, especially on public cultural funding in Austria. The focus was on the question of the legal standards of the cultural promotion process as well as the effects of the allocation policy of the public sector.

From 2006-2008 Zembylas examined examined together with the literary scholar Claudia Dürr literary writing process from a knowledge- theoretic perspective. The focus of research interest was the emergence and effectiveness of an artistic and practical knowledge as well as the role of professional experience. The project opens in a general epistemology of artistic practice.

Most recently, he published a literarized travelogue about Athos. In it, he thematized under other economic matters of the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi, which provided in connection with a real estate scandal 2008 headline in the international press.
