Tassos Papadopoulos

Tassos Papadopoulos (Greek Τάσσος Νικολάου Παπαδόπουλος, born January 7, 1934 in Nicosia, † December 12, 2008 ) was a Greek Cypriot lawyer. From 1 March 2003 to 28 February 2008, he held the office of President of the Republic of Cyprus.

Life

Papadopoulos studied in UK law and worked subsequently as Anwalt.Ab 1960, he was for twelve years assistant to the president of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios. Papadopoulos was a member of EOKA who fought for the independence of the British colony of Cyprus. He was politically active since the mid- 1960s. Papadopoulos was one of the signers of the Constitution of Cyprus and from 1960 to 1970 held various ministerial posts. In 2000 he became chairman of the Civil Democratic Party of Cyprus. He won the presidential election on February 16, 2003, 51.5 percent of the vote and joined the succession of Glafcos Clerides on 1 March 2003. Tassos Papadopoulos was a staunch opponent of a federal coexistence with the Turkish north of the island and was therefore against the Annan peace plan of the United Nations.

In February 2008, Papadopoulos was running for a second term, but was beaten in the very first round of presidential elections its main counterparties Dimitris Christofias and Ioannis Kasoulides. With 31.8 percent, he missed the second ballot on 24 February 2008 to just.

Papadopoulos was a heavy smoker. He was taken on November 22, 2008 in the ICU of the Nicosia General Hospital and died on 12 December 2008 at 13:05 clock in a small cell lung cancer. The funeral was held at the Agia Sophia Church in Nicosia on 15 December 2008.

In the early hours of December 11, 2009 Unknown opened the tomb Papadopoulos and stole his body. After a phone tip, his body was recovered on 8 March 2010 in another grave in Nicosia and identified the next day by a DNA test.
