Tatjana Ždanoka

Tatjana Ždanoka ( born May 8, 1950 in Riga, Russian Татьяна Аркадьевна Жданок ) is a Latvian politician of the party " For Human Rights in United Latvia " (par Cilvēka Tiesībām Vienotā Latvijā ). She is a member of the European Parliament for the Greens / EFA group.

Their political views are associated with the left spectrum. It advocates for the rights of the Russian -speaking minority in Latvia, their main concern is the protection of their national and linguistic identity.

Ždanoka went in the late 1980s as one of the leaders of the International Front of Latvia ( Inter Front), which was directed against the independence of Latvia, in the policy. Previously, she spent mathematics professor at the University of Latvia. In March 1990, she was elected to the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR. Even in the Communist Party of Latvia it was active.

After Latvia regained its independence, it was Ždanoka prohibited for the Saeima, the Latvian parliament to run. This was justified by their whereabouts in the Latvian Communist Party even after their leaders had called for the overthrow in January 1991 against the striving for independence government. She was excluded from the 1998 parliamentary elections and 2002, Latvia complained but to the European Court of Human Rights.

During the proceedings, the Saeima decided not to impose restrictions to former members of the Communist Party in the European elections of 2004. Ždanoka was elected in June 2004 to the European Parliament and won their case against Latvia few days later, on June 17. It was awarded her 20,000 euros and 2236.50 lats. However, Latvia went on the grounds that his situation in the transition from a totalitarian rule had not been adequately addressed in the appeal. On 16 March 2006, the European Court of Human Rights ruled with 13 votes to 4, that Ždanokas rights had not been violated.

In the period 2009-2014 Ždanoka belongs to the Group of the Greens / European Free Alliance and is Deputy Chairman of the Delegation to the Parliamentary Cooperation Committee EU-Moldova

She is a member of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs, the Committee on Petitions and the delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly EURO- NEST. As a deputy she is in the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs and the Delegation to the EU- Russia Parliamentary Cooperation Committee.
