Tatra 87

The Tatra 87 is a car model of the then Czechoslovak and Czech manufacturer Tatra today the luxury class. It was established as a successor to the 77 A 1937 to 1950. A total of (, interrupted by World War II ) produced 3023 vehicles in 13 years. Successor was built 1956 Type 603

History

Type 87 The Tatra 87 was presented in 1937 as a successor to the T77 A. Other than this, which was also provided with a coated onto a wood frame steel body on a base platform (see photos in the publication '100 years Tatras '), he had a semi- monocoque body with center support frame with Y-shaped cantilevers. Its compared to the previous four-door body has been somewhat modified type (determined in 1979 at VW climatic wind tunnel and by recent measurements in the UK and Sweden confirmed ) a drag coefficient of 0.36 and was available with optional sunroof or convertible top. A radio was available.

Designers of the Tatra 87 were Ledwinka Hans and Erich Uebelacker.

The engine displacement was reduced slightly while maintaining performance, the total weight was decreased at a slightly lower overall length by 470 kg, which is mainly due to the use of lighter materials (the motor and gear box and other components are made of electrum, an extremely lightweight magnesium alloy ). As with its predecessor, the air-cooled V8 engine was installed in the rear, but the cooling air supply was improved at higher speed. For the then new Reichsautobahnen designed, it reached a top speed of 150-160 km / h, as cruising speed was 135 km / h is recommended.

In 1948 the body was slightly modernized - with recessed headlights, modified bumpers and a modified interior ( instruments in ivory instead of black ) with more chrome trim on the dashboard. This was built from 1948 version is also known as " Diplomat " model.

From 1936 to 1950 3023 cars were built, of which 1371 to 1945, the remaining 1652 pieces from 1946. The highest annual production was in 1948 at 700 vehicles.

Type 87-603 Between 1950 and 1953 some specimens of type 87 were equipped with the new engine of 603 A. These test vehicles were given the name Tatra 87-603.
