Taubstummengasse (Vienna U-Bahn)

The metro station is a Taubstummengasse opened on February 25, 1978 Station of the Vienna U -Bahn line U1. The two-storey station is located on the Wieden, in low position directly under the pavement of the heavily traveled business road Favorites road and has a central platform. Outputs are in the Mayerhofgasse and Floragasse.

The station was built in the 1970s in an open design and the concept of the group of architects Metro ( W. Wood Bauer, H. Marschalek, G. and B. Ladstätter Gantar ) configured with the red signal of U1. Together with the stations Karlsplatz, Südtirolerplatz, Kepler and Reumannplatz the Taubstummengasse one of the stations of the first after World War II opened up new line of the Vienna U -Bahn. In the immediate vicinity is the Theresianumgasse and Broadcasting House.

First test track

In 1969, they started on the Karlsplatz in Vienna with the construction of the metro line U1. Due to the open construction of the stretch was completed relatively quickly to Taubstummengasse. On this route the first subway sets could be tested, while still being built in other sections. This test operation was ensured by a turning facility and a siding for an underground waste, which had been built after the Taubstummengasse below the Favorites road towards South Tyrolean place. The terminal operation could be simulated in this typical for other subway station buildings environment.

On August 18, 1973, the first subway car was drained at Karlsplatz into the shaft. On September 22, 1973 marked the first tests began between Karlsplatz and Taubstummengasse. A longer test track for the " Silver Arrows " was opened in 1976 to the largely aboveground tracks today between U4 Heiligenstadt and the Peace Bridge.

The turning system still existed until summer 2012. During remediation work but was replaced by an over- control center, so that the driving operation in case of failure does not have to be interrupted completely.

First Aid for the Blind

The Taubstummengasse was the first Vienna U -Bahn station in which a reactive control system was installed. The middle platform with the lying at the ends of staircases seemed best suited for initial testing. In 1993, seven parallel, about 3 cm wide raised ridges of black floor marking color along the platform were attached, which resulted in an approximately 40 cm wide conductive strip.

After the opening of a lift and the reactive control system was updated to 5 May 2004. As part of the renewal of the old system, which was still good despite some palpable signs of wear, was partially replaced. Instead of the black mark now white floor marking paint was used as in the developed later and blind control systems of the Vienna U -Bahn. The control system now includes ten parallel stripes.

Last retrofitted lift

Originally because of the restricted traffic spatial position of the station could not lift to be installed. The demand for a barrier-free use of the subway by wheelchair but was expressed over time of disability organizations increasingly common. Although in 1995 a retrofit program for passenger elevators in all Viennese subway stations had been initiated by the City of Vienna, it was not until 28 April 2004 that a lift was opened as the completion of this expansion program here. The Taubstummengasse So that was the last one that - was retrofitted with a lift - More than 26 years after its opening. In future built subway stations have since its opening have such lifts.

The subway was begun in the 1970s, just here in the busy, leading to the city center street favorites to create more space for car traffic and to lay the then congested public rail transport under the street level. Well, it turned out to be a direct lift from the central platform of the station would make a traffic island in the middle of the road and thus a narrowing of the carriageway and corresponding traffic lights for crossing required. Therefore, long time it was discussed a solution, which provided a guide of the lift from the platform to the mezzanine with a transfer possibility in a further away from the station located second lift. Ultimately, they decided, after the experience with the metro station Nestroyplatz, in a similar lift had to be retrofitted for direct lift control.
