Tavas is the capital of the district of the Turkish province of Denizli. Tavas is located about 44 km south of the provincial capital of Denizli. Tavas had according to the last census, 12,720 inhabitants ( as of December 2010). With the associated villages and small towns, the population is 50 703.

Geography

The county is bordered on the north by the Tavas counties Babadağ and Denizli, in the east or to the south by the counties and Acıpayam Serinhisar and in the west to the counties Beyağaç, Kale and Karacasu ( Aydın ). The landscape is particularly marked by mountains. To the east of the county, the mountains are Bozdağ ( 2419 m) ​​and Kızılhisar Dagi ( 2241 meters ).

Climate

The city has a distinctive climate, similar to the Central Anatolia. Therefore, it is cold in winter and rainy and hot in summer and dry. Although the annual temperature difference is large, the average rainfall is significantly higher than in Central Anatolia.

History

Ancient relics from the Roman and Byzantine period were discovered in the area of Vakıf, Medet, Yorga, Kızılcabölük and Kızılca.

The area around the city was conquered in the 13th century by the Seljuk Turks, and the city was founded in its current location as Yarengüme. The importance of the old name is translated as the place to accumulate friends. Yaren is friend and güme, a modification of kümelenmek means to accumulate. During the Seljuk period settled in the area oghusische Turkmens from Central Asia down. Tavas belonged in the Seljuk period to 1365 at the Tavaslıoğlu Beyliği and then the Menteşe Beyliği. In the Ottoman period Tavas belonged to the Vilayet -i Aydın.

Economy and infrastructure
