Tavurvur

Tavurvur (formerly called Ghaie ) is a volcano in Papua New Guinea near the town of Rabaul in the East of the island of New Britain.

At last he broke out on 7 October 2006 and an ash cloud was thrown to 18 km in the stratosphere. The volcano has since been continuously active. Before that broke the volcano in 1994. At that time, Rabaul was buried under ash and had to be rebuilt elsewhere. Numerous administrative centers were moved to Kokopo.

The volcano lies within the 8 times 14 km wide Rabaul caldera, which originated around 550 AD, when a massive volcanic eruption of magnitude 6 on the Vulkanexplosivitätsindex. Occasionally, it is discussed whether this outbreak could be responsible for the weather anomaly of 535/536, but this is controversial.
