Tawang ( Tibetan: wang rta ) is a town in the west of the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh on the border with Bhutan and China. He has about 4500 inhabitants and is the administrative seat of the district of Tawang.

Located at nearly 3000 meters above sea level Tawang is known for its back -sighted on a 400 -year history lamasery Galden.RTM Namgyal Lhatse. It is considered the largest Buddhist monastery in India today. 1683, the sixth Dalai Lama was born in Tawang Tsangyang Gyatsho.

The mountain town near the border with Tibet is strategically important military location, because of there offers a faster access to the northeastern Assam level. It was occupied on 23 October 1962 at the India-China War of Chinese troops.

From the viewpoint of the People's Republic of China is Tawang (达 旺镇, dawang Zhen ) is a large village in the administrative district of Shannan Cona county in Tibet Autonomous Region.
