At- Tayyib Salih, Arabic الطيب صالح, DMG aṭ - Taiyib Salih, Tayeb Salih also, Tajjib Salich, Tajjeb Salech, (* July 12, 1928 in the village of al - Dabba, Merowe District, Sudan, † February 18, 2009 in London) was a Sudanese writer.

Life

He studied at the University of Khartoum and worked as a teacher. Later he studied in London international relations. At times, he was employed in the Arab department of the BBC London. Salih was Director General of the Ministry of Information in Qatar. Since 1999 he worked at UNESCO in Paris in various positions, most recently as its representative in the states of the Persian Gulf.

At- Tayyib Salih was the most important modern Arab writer from Sudan. A central theme of his work is the transgression of cultural boundaries between traditional Sudanese and Western culture. In his most famous work, al - Hijra ila al Mawsim - SimAL (1967, German: "Days of northern migration " ), such a boundary transition is told through the eyes of a Sudanese students in the UK. The title simply " walk north " translated Hijra is the deeper meaning of " exiled " in Arabic, because it refers to the migration of the Prophet from Mecca to Medina. Also in Bandarschâh traditional village life is juxtaposed with its changes of Western modernity.
