Taylor County (West Virginia)

Taylor County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Grafton.

Geography

The County is located in the central north east of West Virginia, is in the north about 50 miles from Pennsylvania to the east approximately 45 miles from Maryland and has an area of 455 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Monongalia County, Preston County, Barbour County, Harrison County and Marion County.

History

Taylor County was formed on January 19, 1844 from parts of Barbour County, Harrison County and Marion County. It was named after John Taylor, an American writer, politician and U.S. Senator.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Taylor County 16,089 people in 6,320 households and 4,487 families. The population density was 36 people per square kilometer.
