The Autonomous District of the Taimyr Dolgan and Nenets (Russian Таймырский ( Долгано - Ненецкий ) автономный округ, Taimyrski ( Dolgano - Nenezki ) awtonomny okrug ) is a former federal subject of the Russian North. On 1 January 2007, the Autonomous District, as well as the Autonomous District of the Evenki, united after a referendum held on 17 April 2005 with the Krasnoyarsk region. Within the limits of the Autonomous Okrug is since the Taimyrski Dolgano - Nenezki rayon ( " Rajon Taimyr Dolgan and Nenets of ").

The Autonomous district covered an area of 862,100 km ², and had on 1 January 2005 39 378 inhabitants.

The huge, almost deserted area is located on the Arctic Ocean and includes the Taimyr peninsula with the Byrrangagebirge that Taimyrsenke and the north of the Central Siberian uplands, the Putorana Mountains. The northern tip of the peninsula, Cape Tscheljuskin, is the northernmost point not located on an island in the world. The Severnaya Zemlya Archipelago also belonged to the autonomous district.

Most important rivers are the Yenisei, the Pjassina and Chatanga.

The coal and natural gas production in the region is still in its infancy.

Capital of the autonomous district was Dudinka. The mining town of Norilsk, which actually lay within the boundaries belonged administratively previously for Krasnoyarsk Territory. The population lives half in the capital Dudinka.

Population

Titular nations were the Dolgan and Nenets, but even so the Russians always the majority. In addition to the ethnic groups listed below 2002 or 239 181 Azeris and Kyrgyz were counted. The total population was 2002 39.786 people.
