Tbilisi State Academy of Arts

The State Academy of Arts, Tbilisi (Georgian თბილისის სახელმწიფო სამხატვრო აკადემია ) is one of the oldest universities in Georgia. It is located in the capital Tbilisi, Rustaveli Avenue ( at the intersection A. Tchavtchavadze Street and A. Griboedov Street). Nearby is the building of the State Opera.

History

The consummated on March 8, 1922 The Academy of Arts of Georgia based on the decision of the People's Commissariat of Education. In this early period of four faculties were established: painting, sculpture, graphics and architecture, complemented in 1927 by the Faculty of Art Pottery.

In preparation for university studies which also opened in 1922 private art school of Georgian artist Mose was intended Toidze. The Art Academy at once formed the center of the Georgian art scene, a number of renowned artists were employed as teachers. The first professors were: Gigo Gabashvili, Jacob Nikoladze, Yevgeny Lansere, Joseph Sharlemagne, Henryk Hryniewski, Egishe Tatevosyan, Nikolay Sklifosovskiy, Nicholas Antadze, Anatoly Kalgin, Nikolay Severove, Dimitri Shevardnadze, Michael Machavariani, Alexander Pitskhelauri, Michael Khananashvili, Boris Shebuev, Moses Toidze, Alexander Tsimakuridze, Nicholas Kandelaki, Valerian Sidamon - Eristavi, David Kakabadze, Lado Gudiaschwili, Giorgi Sesiashvili, Ucha Japaridze, Shalva Amiranashvili, Apolon Kutateladze, Valentin Shukhaev, Sergo Kobuladze, Silovan Kakabadze, Shota Mikatadze, David Tsitsishvili, Zakro Maisuradze, Lado Grigolia. Later, this group joined other famous representatives of Georgian art scene.

Building

The State Academy of Arts, Tbilisi is located since 1922 in the former palace of the Arshakuni family. The main building was designed in 1856 by architect G. Ivanov. The majority of the rooms and interiors were designed by a working in Tbilisi Iranian builder in Qajar style. The building complex was until 1937 a hall of mirrors, he served as a ballet studio of Maria Perini. This dancer was the wife of the artist Henryk Hryniewski, who also had a studio in the house. The studio of the Academy Professor Gigo Gabashvili, the home of Kobulashvili family and other facilities spread across the floors of the house.

In 1972 was built behind the old main building, a new ten -story home as an extension (architects: A. Kurdiani, M. Chkhikvadze, L. Sumbadze, D. Kajaia ). It was renovated in 2005-06 with the " Cartu - bank" financial participation.

Training

Goal of teaching at the Academy of Arts Tbilisi is to promote the individual personality of each student to train the young artists on the basis of classical knowledge and support their potential through versatile practice. The methodology of the study is determined by the principles: promoting openness, receptiveness and flexibility through the process of conscious and cognitive.

All training programs of the State Academy of Arts Tbilisi are available in Georgian. For foreign applicants, who all possess a required qualification ( secondary school) have, but for which the evidence of Georgian language skills lacking, a compulsory language course and aptitude test is required.
