Te Awamutu

Te Awamutu is the administrative seat of the Waipa District ( Waikato region ) in the North Island of New Zealand. The town itself has about 9,500 inhabitants, and in the municipality of about 14,000 people.

Geography

The village is located about 30 kilometers south of Hamilton, by far the region's largest city, on State Highway 3, 20 km west of Te Awamutu is the 962 meter Mount Pirongia, which is not only the highest mountain of the district, but the whole region. In the north and in the east the Waikato Plains, vast, fertile plains lie. Cambridge, which also belongs to the Waipa District, is 25 kilometers north-east, Otorohanga, in the same district, is located about 30 kilometers to the southeast and Raglan is located about 50 kilometers to the northwest. The small town of Kihikihi joins just south of Te Awamutu.

History

In the New Zealand wars in the 19th century, the entire region played an important role in Te Awamutu itself served as a garrison town for the European settlers, the Pākehā.

Sons and daughters of the town

The most famous sons of the city are the siblings Tim and Neil Finn, who in the 1970s and 1980s in New Zealand were able to record great success with the band Split Enz before they were acquainted with the band Crowded House world.
