Te Kao is a settlement on the Aupouri Peninsula in Northland on the North Island of New Zealand. It is located on State Highway 1 on Highway Nearby places are Tangoake 3 km north and Ngataki about 12 km to the southeast. Te Kao is located on a small river, the Te Kao Stream, which flows 3 km north at Tagoake in the Parengarenga Harbour.

The nearest town is Kaitaia. The beach Ninety Mile Beach is located about 5 km south-west. A native of Te Aupouri athletes Te Houtaewa started his run along the Ninety Mile Beach, Te Kao.

From Te Kao, a road leads west to the settlement Ngatiwhetu and the Lake Wahakari.

Education

Te Kao has a primary school, de Te Kao School, a co-educational primary school for the school years 1-8 and a decile rating of 2 and 22 students in 2009, the school celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2006.
