Te Kuiti

Te Kuiti is a small town in the south of the Waikato region in the North Island of New Zealand and the administrative headquarters of the Waitomo District. At the 2001 census, the city had 4,374 inhabitants, a decrease of 5.1% since the last census in 1991.

Te Kuiti is located 70 km south of Hamilton and 19 km south-east of Waitomo at the junction of State Highways 3 and 30 and on the North Iceland Main Trunk Railway.

Te Kuiti is the name of the Māori for the area, derived from the original form of " Te Kuititanga " ( the "Valley " or the " narrowing ").

The city markets itself as " the world capital of sheep shearing ." It is host to the annual National Championships in sheep shearing. In the city of a 7 meter high statue of a sheep shearer was erected. On April 1, 2006 in the city of the world's largest sheep exhibition held with more than 2,000 participating sheep.

At the end of the main street there are the Japanese Tatsuno Gardens. Northwest of the town are the Waitomo Caves. These limestone caves are one of the most visited attractions in New Zealand.

The area around Te Kuiti is known as the King Country. It served as a patron for the resident in the town of Rugby team that plays in the National Provincial Championship. The city is a stop on the Overlander.
