Te Wairoa

Te Wairoa also known as The Buried Village ( the buried village) is a place west of Lake Tarawera in the North Island of New Zealand. It is located 14 km southeast of Rotorua in the Tawera Road.

Two other lakes, Lake Rotokakahi and Lake Tikitapu lie west of the village.

In the village inhabited by Māori and Europeans visitors to the Pink and White Terraces were under. The village was destroyed on 10 June 1886 a massive eruption of Mount Tarawera volcano. At least 100 people died, many of them located in the volcano closer to other villages.

The village is now open to the public and displays excavated ruins of the houses. In a museum, excavated objects are exhibited and it is shown the history of the eruption.

The land of Te Wairoa was about three generations of the Smith family. The first generation bought the land from the first missionary in Te Wairoa named Seymour. The family owned and operated since the excavation of the site.
