Teatro Argentina

The Teatro Argentina in Rome is at the Largo di Torre Argentina and is one of the most important theaters of the Italian capital.

History

The Teatro Argentina, one of the oldest theaters in Rome, was inaugurated on January 31, 1732 with the opera Berenice by Domenico Sarro. On February 20, 1816, the premiere of the Barber of Seville by Rossini took place here. Although the premiere was a fiasco, but in the following performances, the opera was increasingly a major success. Some operas of Giuseppe Verdi's opera Mercadante and I due Foscari were premiered here.

Today, the Teatro Argentina serves as spoken theater, as well as to the performance of operas and symphonies. The interior of the house is home to a historic theater Museum (Museo Storico del Teatro ) with a picture and document archive.
