Tébessa

Tébessa, Arabic تبسة, DMG Tibissa (also Tébessa or Tbessa ), is the capital of the Algerian province.

It lies about 40 km from the Algerian- Tunisian border at an altitude of 960 meters and has more than 200,000 inhabitants ( 2005 estimate ). Tébessa is a university town and has an international airport ( Airport Cheikh Larbi Tebessi, IATA Code: TEE).

Furthermore Tébessa is the center of the Algerian scene and also organizes every year an international film festival.

History

In ancient times, led one of the most important trade routes in the Roman Africa from Carthage to Tebessa or Theveste (Greek Θεουέστη ), as it was then. To 75 AD the Roman Legio III Augusta was stationed there. Some ruins of the Roman period have remained there to this day.

In the year 295 the early Christian conscientious objectors Maximilian suffered in Theveste martyred.

Religion

Theveste is a Catholic titular, titular bishop of Theveste current (since 2006) is John Anthony Dooher, Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Boston, (Mass. ) United States.

  • Sheikh Larbi Tebessi, symbol of the Algerian independence, france critical cleric was murdered in 1956 by the then colonial masters
