Teburoro Tito

Teburoro Tito (* 1953), in more recent case also Tiito [ si: to], was from 1 October 1994 to 4 July 2003, Heads of State or Government and Foreign Ministers of the Republic of Kiribati. He is a member of the party Boutokaan Te Koaua ( Pillars of Truth ).

Tasks and goals of his government

Programmatic objectives of his government were to reduce the rapid population growth, which led to unemployment and scarcity of land and the modernization of the State fishing industry. Other important problems of the country during his reign were the growing debt, and water scarcity.

Some events during his reign

1996 Tito appealed urgently to the industrialized countries to reduce their carbon dioxide emissions drastically to stop a further rise in sea level. Since most of the islands of Kiribati extend only a few meters from the water, flooding Kiribati was feared by the middle of the 21st century.

Though grew during his reign at about eleven million Australian dollars foreign debt Kiribati Tito was confirmed on 27 November 1998 in direct elections with nearly 53 percent of the vote in the Office of State and Government of Kiribati.

On 1 January 2000 an atoll on the edge of Kiribati, the new millennium in a large-scale celebration was under his leadership on the main island of Caroline Atoll, begun.

On 10 May 2002 Tito gave a speech to the UN.

On 5 July 2003 Anote Tong Teburoro Tito took over from the Heads of State and Head of Government and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kiribati.
