Technischer Ãœberwachungsverein

As Technical Inspection Association (abbreviated MOT, usually spoken [ tʏf ] ) are registered associations designated to perform the technical security controls, especially those that are prescribed by national laws or regulations, on a private enterprise basis as indirect state administration in the form of lendings. Their most famous is the main examination for motor vehicles, which is also colloquially known as " TÜV ".

Member of TÜV since establishment of the first steam boiler Revision Association - the original name - in 1866, business enterprises which operate systems requiring monitoring.

Tasks and organization

In Germany the TÜV TÜV companies, mainly in the three major South Holdings, TÜV Rheinland and TÜV Nord are organized. Then there are the unaffiliated TÜV Thüringen and TÜV Saarland. All have sovereign tasks in the fields of automotive monitoring, the driving system and the equipment and product safety. All entities that carry " TÜV " in their names, belong to at least 25.1% of a Technical Inspection Association eV, which is on loan as a self-help organization of the German economy from the state with the aforementioned sovereign tasks ( " TÜV Convention ").

The former regional demarcation in Germany ( " regional principle " ) is canceled due to deregulation and liberalization on more and more work areas. The companies operate in these areas as well as in the so-called "free economic area " as joint stock companies on the market independently and compete with each other. They are in many working areas, eg in the field of product certification and certification of management systems, represented by subsidiaries worldwide.

In Austria, on a foundation as Überwachungsverein in 1872 declining TÜV Austria has developed into the international TÜV Austria Group.

Since 2007 TÜV sites are operated in Turkey. The operator is TüvTurk, a subsidiary of TÜV SÜD.

The brand " TÜV "

The brand " TÜV " is a registered favor of this test organizations and VdTÜV brand of very high profile. She is a valuable asset of the TÜV auditors.

In the general public was " TÜV " especially about the main investigation. The label " TUV" has colloquially become a synonym for technical tests developed ( bringing his car " for TUV", even if it is now often audited by another organization, as the former monopoly was dissolved for this test ).

" TÜV - tested" is colloquially a quality seal for technical audits by TÜV society (see above). The label " TUV - tested" may only be used by a Technical Inspection Association or a subsidiary. Anything else would be misleading consumers or unfair competition. This quality seal is increasingly being misused by counterfeits.

Because having " TÜV " especially in Germany and Austria, and which now also world enjoys a high reputation regarding neutrality and expertise and a high level of awareness, the meaning content of this brand in the vernacular on many social problem areas and grievances will be applied when demands for control and transparency are loud: bureaucracy TÜV, school TUV, politicians MOT, alcohol TUV, parent- TUV, building - TUV, event TUV, ship TUV, LASIK TÜV, Here the abbreviation TÜV is also used in contexts that the brand are little conducive ( " animal husbandry TÜV "). The TÜVe leave such a mark not to abuse and warn off if necessary.

History

During the period of industrialization founded boiler owners independent regional monitoring organizations in the form of associations, whose success was so great in accident prevention that since 1871 freed the membership of such a club of the inspection by a state inspector. As the number and efficiency of steam engines had more accidents caused by exploding (more precisely: zerknallende ) where steam boiler.

The resulting regional " steam boiler monitoring and auditing associations" ( DÜV ) were thus as self-help organizations of boiler operators an early example of a very successful privatization of previously state exams. Because they were so successful in the prevention of accidents in the rapidly evolving steam boiler technology, they were later also charged with security checks in other technical areas, including in the periodic inspection of motor vehicles and driving test.

All that emerged from these common roots Participate groups from using the mark " TÜV " and a regional supplement ( for example, TÜV SÜD, TÜV Rheinland, TUV Nord, TUV Saarland, TÜV Thüringen, TÜV Austria ) in the name. They are in some areas to each other and to other market participants in the competition (see above).

Mergers

In the history of Technical Inspection Agencies, there have been a number of successful mergers. Still further reflections on a fusion of all TÜV - groups to " TÜV Germany " or " TÜV Europe" between themselves with the aim of the competition is no longer current. You would now probably fail on antitrust law. Also in 2007, pushed forward with high visibility merger activities of TÜV Nord and TÜV Süd came to nothing. However, TÜV SÜD and TÜV Rheinland to the spring of 2008 to merge determined, but this was defeated by the Federal Cartel Office failed, which has a dominant position in Germany in the field of monitoring of elevators, steam and pressure equipment and hazardous equipment (eg gas stations ) feared. As headquarters of the new "super- TÜV " Munich was planned. The new company would have been the number 3 of audit by SGS and Bureau Veritas worldwide with a total of 25,500 employees. The merger plans are not actively pursued at present ( spring 2009).
