Location

History

The technical departments of the city administration of Munich won especially after the First World War in importance; it also meant an increase in professionals and an increased space requirements. Therefore, it was in 1919 took the initiative all the technical departments to concentrate in a building. With the opening of the city's high-rise in 1929 in the flower street (house 28b), Munich's first high-rise building, this concept was eventually implemented.

But soon, this skyscraper was too tight. After the separation of the former Baureferates in planning unit ( urban land and urban development ) and Building Department ( Building maintenance of municipal buildings and infrastructure) in the 1980s, the departments of Baureferates were distributed to 23 locations throughout the city in the early 1990s. The planned re-integration of the metro Referates in Baureferat this situation would have been exacerbated. It was therefore worked intensively since 1988 on plans for a central location. 1993, after the decision had been cut in favor of a new building on the brownfield site of the former Milchhof near the East Railway Station, an architectural competition was held, in which the shape to be found first and then only then should be the detailed planning. Building owner on behalf of the City of Munich was the HANKO mbH & Co. KG rental company. However, the project management remained with the Building Department. The Munich-based architect's office full Unterholzner won the competition in 1993. The detailed planning began in 1994, the construction started in 1997. 141 690 000 The euro expensive construction was completed in 2000 and occupied in April 2000.

Conception

The Technical City Hall follows the basic concept of the perimeter block development of the structure of its environment, but continues with its 63 -meter tower (building ) with 18 floors and two lifts its own accent. Inside the principles of " workshop character " and " transparent administration " apply. Transparency is not only created through the use of natural light in the hallways and through the continuous window sills - the offices are open and allow insights. As envisioned by the architects, citizens should be able to see the staff of the Baureferates at work and occur as both in communication with each other. The use of these open spaces and the use of simple materials such as concrete, wood floor in the company restaurant, concrete floor in the hall, etc., give the building a workshop character.

Art in architecture

The New York artist Vito Acconci created as art in building the " Courtyard in the Wind" (English: Courtyard in the wind ). In the publicly accessible courtyard slowly a disk rotates in the yard when the wind drives the twelve -meter rotor on top of the tower.
