Tecolutla is a city and municipality in the Mexican state of Veracruz, located on the estuary of the Río Tecolutla in the Gulf of Mexico in the Bay of Campeche. Tecolutla is located 191 km north of Vera Cruz on the national road 180 and has about 3900 inhabitants. About 30 km to the west lies the UNESCO World Heritage Site of El Tajín. The oil city of Poza Rica is located about 50 km.

The city's name means "place of owls ."

Tecolutla is known for its beaches, mangroves and fishing grounds, but also for the endangered turtle species. The beaches are on the northern end of the Costa Esmeralda, which herre ot of Veracruz. A fishing tournament to fish for tarpon takes place every year in May.
