Ted Nolan

Theodore John "Ted" Nolan ( born April 7, 1958 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player ( left wing ) and coach. Since November 2013 he is interim coach of the Buffalo Sabres, he already trained between 1995 and 1997. In addition, he took over in August 2011 as coach of the Latvian national ice hockey team.

As a player, Nolan was from 1981 to 1986 for the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League active. He was also between 2006 and 2008 coach of the New York Islanders.

Career

As a player

Together with Wayne Gretzky played a native of the tribe of Chippewa Indians as a junior at the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the OHA. The Detroit Red Wings selected him in the NHL Amateur Draft 1978 in the fifth round as the 78th case of the Kansas City Red Wings in the CHL, he played for the first time at senior level.

After two and a half seasons with the Adirondack Red Wings, he made his debut with the Detroit Red Wings in the NHL. After another 19 games in the season 1983/84 he left the Red Wings to the Buffalo Sabres. After him they had only used with the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League, he returned the following year back with the Pittsburgh Penguins for 18 games in the NHL.

As a coach

In 1988, he took over his former junior team, the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds as coach. Three times in a row, he led the team to the finals of the Memorial Cup. 1993 won the Greyhounds the title. In 1984 he Change servicekit as assistant coach to the Hartford Whalers. After a year of joining as head coach of the Buffalo Sabres. There he was very successful for two years, but fell out with the star goalkeeper Dominik Hasek and general manager John Muckler. This deprived the basis for further cooperation and so he was replaced by Lindy Ruff.

Only in 2005 he returned to hockey. He coached the Moncton Wildcats in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League this time he had to deal with racist abuse during a game against the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. The New York Islanders tried it during the season to commit, but Nolan wanted to fulfill his contract in Moncton. After the end of the season, he agreed with the Islanders and took over the team for the season 2006/07. After the Islanders ranked for a long time outside the playoff places them in the qualification last season game finally succeeded yet, but already failed in the first round. However, in the 2007/ 08 season they missed the playoffs and in the summer of 2008, the team of Nolan parted. After a period with the Rochester Americans, he has been training since 2011, the Latvian national team. Since November 13, 2013 he also trained again the Buffalo Sabres.
