Teesdale (district)

Teesdale was a District in the County of Durham in England. Administrative seat and largest town by far was the town of Barnard Castle.

The district was formed on 1 April 1974 and evolved from the merger of the Urban District Barnard Castle Barnard Castle and the Rural District. The Rural District Startforth, who was come also, the areas encompassed south of the River Tees and traditionally belonged to the North Riding of Yorkshire. On 1 April 2009, in addition Teesdale, County Durham all Dictricts were abolished in the course of administrative reform and combined into the Unitary Authority of Durham.

Of all the ordinary Districts in England was Teesdale those with the smallest population. Only the City of London and the Isles of Scilly, both of which have a special status, had even fewer inhabitants. Behind Eden in Cumbria Teesdale also had the lowest population density.

The flora of Teesdale is documented and preserved in the peat bank Garden of the University of Newcastle.
