Tefilat HaDerech

The Tefilat HaDerech (Hebrew תפילת הדרך ) is a Jewish prayer for the trip, literally the " prayer of the Way". Jews speak it when they go on a journey in which they go outside the city limits, as a wish for a safe journey and arrival at the destination.

History

The Talmud writes the creation of this rite the prophet Elijah to a scholar who pointed out: "If you go on a journey, seeking the advice of your Creator and move on. "

Rite

The Tefilat HaDerech once recited at the beginning of each day of travel, if at least one Persian mile ( 1500 m ) is traveled per day. If possible, this prayer should be recited while standing, although in places where standing up is complicated ( Ber. 30a; .. SH Ar, OH 110:4-7 ) are spoken such as in a car or airplane, even when sitting allowed. The prayer is spoken in the first person plural. Both Ashkenazim and Sephardim say this prayer, with the text differs slightly. Also, there are additional passages for air and sea travel.

Alternative versions of this prayer - specifically for paratroopers, pilots, sailors and soldiers - were written by Shlomo Goren, former chief rabbi of the Israel Defense Forces.
