Tegla Loroupe

Tegla Loroupe Chepkite ( born May 9, 1973 in Kapsait ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner who set a world record in the marathon aufstellte twice, three times became world champion in the half marathon and achieved many victories in major city marathons.

Tegla Loroupes father had five wives, and so she grew up with 24 siblings. When she was seven years old, she had the morning 10 km to school and afternoon run back home. She also began in their school to participate in school competitions. Loroupe was about 800 meters and 1500 meters and was discovered quite successful in these races. She got out of her family only by her mother support.

The Kenyan athletics federation they are not promoted at first, but after their victory at a major cross-country running, this changed. In 1994, she immediately won the New York City Marathon. The highlight of her career is the victory in 1999 at the Berlin Marathon in a world record time of 2:20:43. At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000, she launched the 10,000 m and the marathon, but was struck by food poisoning and not successful in both disciplines.

Loroupe is athlete ambassador of development organization Right to Play.

  • Owner of the current world records over 20,000 m ( 1:05:26.6 ), 25,000 m ( 1:27:05.9 ) and 30,000 m ( 1:45:50.0 )
