Tekezé River

Tekeze in February 2009

The Tekeze Setit is a river in Ethiopia and Sudan.

In Ethiopia, the river is called Tekeze ( Amharic ተከዜ täkäze, also Tekeze ) and in Sudan and in the border area between Sudan and Ethiopia, the river is called Setit.

It has a length of 608 km, rises as Tekeze in the central highlands near Mt Qachen and flows first west, then north. After he has bathed in the massif to the Ras Dashän ( Simien ), it swings west and forms for a short time the westernmost part of the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea, where it flows towards Sudan. Once the Tekeze to Sudan enters, it becomes the River Setit, which flows into the Atbara.

Its water management focused on the rainy season in the months of July, August and September. Since the commissioning of the Tekeze dam near the Ras Dashän in September 2009, the water supply is more balanced.
