Tekkiye Mosque

The Tekkiye Suleiman or the Sultan Süleyman Dervish Monastery ( also Tekkiye Mosque or Sultan Süleyman Mosque, Arabic التكية السليمانية Takkiya Sulaymaniyya, Monastery of Süleyman ', Turkish Tekkiye Camii ) is a set up by the Ottoman architect Sinan religious complex in Damascus. It is located near the national museum and consists of a mosque with adjoining Islamic school ( madrasa ). The Tekkiye was 1553/1554 given by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent commissioned. At the site previously was the residence of the Mamlukenfürsten Baibars. The complex was completed in 1566-1567.

The courtyard garden is the grave of the exiled, the last Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Mehmed VI.

Method of construction

The construction of the mosque combines the typical Damascene Black -and-white architecture with historical ottoman domes and two slender minarets. The outer walls measuring 100 x 150 meters. The complex served pilgrims and travelers as a base and made simultaneously for the spiritual care.
