Tekoa, Gush Etzion

Tekoa (Hebrew תקוע ) is a Jewish settlement since 1967 in the Israeli-occupied West Bank with 1635 inhabitants ( 2008). The settlement was founded in 1977 and is located in Gush Etzion region in the Judean Hills, about 20 km south of Jerusalem and about 10 km south of Bethlehem. The village lies at an altitude of 670 m above sea level. d mean sea level on a ridge that is surrounded on three sides by the Tekoa Gorge.

Outpost:

  • Tekoa B and C, founded in 2001 is located 500 meters south of the settlement of Tekoa. In 2006 it consisted of 44 caravans and 15 houses and 120 inhabitants counted.
  • Tekoa D, founded in 2002, located 1.8 km south-east of the settlement of Tekoa and 700 meters south of the settlement Nokdim. 2006 consisted of 23 residential units and had 50 inhabitants.

South of the Jewish settlement of Tekoa, the Arab- Palestinian village is the same name (Arabic تقوع Tuqu ') with 8881 inhabitants (2007 ).

Located near the ruins were used as in the Hebrew Bible repeatedly mentioned, fortified by King Rechabeam Judean town of Tekoa identified ( 2 Chr 11.6 EU), which is regarded as the origin of the prophet Amos ( Amos 1:1 EU).
