Telchac Puerto

Telchac Puerto is a small port city in northern Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula with about 1,500 inhabitants.

Location

Telchac Puerto is situated just a few kilometers east of Laguna Rosada about 68 km ( driving distance ) north-east of Mérida and about 44 km east of the port city of Progreso; the place Telchac Pueblo is located about 15 km south.

Climate

The subtropical to tropical climate is - as in the entire Caribbean - hot and humid. The average annual temperature is during the day about 31 °; at night the thermometer rarely falls below 20 °. The annual rainfall is about 600 mm, while in the summer months, June to September, the most rain.

Economy

The place lived a long time from fishing and salt production. Since the 1980s, tourism plays - primarily for Mexicans - an ever more important role; Beaches, hotels, restaurants provide the necessary infrastructure. Nearby Playa de Coco, one of the few beaches in Mexico, where the coconut palm trees, since the 1980s most rampant Palm is dying ( lethal yellowing = ' lethal yellowing ') have survived.

Environment

Approximately 6 kilometers south-west are the quite remarkable ruins of the small Maya city Xcambó, in a colonial time chapel ( capilla abierta ) was built into it.
