Telematics

Telematics ( combination of telecommunication and computer science ) is a technique which links the telecommunications and computer science. Telematics is thus the means of information linking at least two information systems with the aid of a telecommunications system, and a special data processing. The term was coined by Nora and Minc (1978 ) coined as part of their study for the computerization of society.

Core areas

Among the key areas with which the telematics is concerned, include information networks such as the Internet, telephone and mobile networks. In addition, count on telematics include the following specialties:

  • Traffic telematics
  • Fleet Management
  • Building automation ( Facility Management)
  • Remote control
  • E-Commerce ( Logistics)
  • Human telematics / telemedicine ( e -Health)
  • Education telematics (E -Learning )
  • Security telematics
  • Telematics industry
  • M2M telematics

It is disputed whether this is a separate subject area in telematics, or whether it is a branch of computer science. Over the years, independent study programs and professional associations have formed.

Training and professional association in Germany

The first Institute of Telematics in Germany was founded in 1982 at the Faculty of computer science at the University of Karlsruhe (TH). In 1999, a Bachelor's / Master's degree program was developed telematics as a model program at the TH Wildau ( FH) in Berlin. He is internationally certified since 2001/2002 as a consecutive study.

The German telematics company TelematicsPro eV was established as a professional association in 1998. It has set itself the task of making the telematics known and supported. It takes the position that telematics is a standalone cross-cutting technology and can be the basis for many future systems, services and application solutions in communicatively linked information systems.

Education in Austria

A course telematics has existed since 1985 ( originally 10 -semester diploma program, now divided into 6 semesters Bachelor and Master study 4 semesters ) at the Technical University of Graz. This study includes both topics of computer science and electrical engineering.

IBM Herrenberg: When IBM computer science academy is especially qualified scientists and professionals can be certified in an additional study at a cooperating university for Telematics Engineer.
