Telendos

The small Greek island Telendos (Greek Τέλενδος ( f sg ) ) in the eastern Aegean is managed by the Municipality of Kalymnos in the region South Aegean.

Location

Telendos is located about a kilometer west of Kalymnos. The uninhabited islands lie in the southwest and Epano Agia Kyriaki about 1.4 km south. The also uninhabited island Kalavros is about 2 km north-east front of the bay of Arginonda ( Κόλπος Αργινώντα ).

The image of Telendos is dominated by the ridge Rachi ( Ράχη ) of the island from Aspros Kavos ( Άσπρος Κάβος, White Cape ') by pulling up near the east coast to the west and reached the island in the middle of 459 m. To the southeast, an approximately 900 m long and nearly 400 m wide, south-facing flat peninsula connects with the Cape Pnigmenos ( Ακρωτήριο Πνιγμένος ) as the southernmost point of the island. The valley of the island lies at the transition to the peninsula on the east side. Across the strait lie on Kalymnos places Myrtie and Masouri.

Name

The name origin Telendos is now considered pre-Greek. Travelers and geographers of the early Middle Ages the island Agalia or Klarus is called. The Florentine monk Cristoforo Buondelmonti and travelers referred to the island in 1420 with the name Telendos and describes it as uninhabited. Even on a Greek PORTOLAN from the beginning of the 16th century is to find the name. The Italian geographer Francesco Piacenza mentions it in 1688 as well and reported an uninhabited island with a pine forest. From Riga Velestinlis it is referred to in the second half of the 18th century as Klaros ( Κλάρος ).

Mythology

According to legend Telentos accused the king of Pothea his daughter Potha because of their unrequited love for Andronikos the Prince of Kastelli on Kalymnos into the sea. My body froze and her face was marked on the Rachi, the highest peak of Telendos from.

History

The history of Telendos is closely linked to Kalymnos as the island 554 AD was separated from the larger neighboring island following an earthquake in the year.

Excavations on three private land in the years 2000 to 2001 and 2003 provided evidence that the area of the present-day village was inhabited from the Hellenistic period until the earthquake in the Byzantine period. Ruins of a theater are the most important example of pre-Christian times. The settlement grew during the Roman period and reached its greatest extent in the early Christian years. Remains of five early Christian basilicas from the 5th and 7th centuries AD evidence of an important Christian center.

Middle of the 7th century AD in the Byzantine period, the town was abandoned and about 3 km northwest founded in 300 m height a fortified settlement. The old seaside village was repopulated gradually in the 11th century and left the Byzantine settlement. In the early 20th century settled in the eastern district of Telendos sponge divers, fishermen and sailors.

Demographics

As on other small islands lead poor infrastructure and limited resources to problems in the development, which leads to a continuous decrease in the population of Telendos.

Economy and infrastructure

The livelihood for the inhabitants by fishing and farming for self-supply to a small extent. The main source of income is the income from the individual tourism. On the island there are 200 guest beds.

For climbers since 2007, several climbing routes were opened up.

Telendos can be reached via the port of Myrtie on Kalymnos, regular ferry services do not exist.

On Telendos there is a small school with a school child (2007).

Fauna

Year-round live peregrine falcons and eagles buzzards on Telendos as a breeding area, the island of Audouin's gulls, Eleonora's falcon and classified by the IUCN as endangered lesser kestrel is searched.

The Greek bird protection organization ( Ελληνική Ορνιθολογική Εταιρεία ), a partner of BirdLife International, has the island included in the protection program of Eleonora's falcon and ranks it among the ten most important bird sanctuaries of Greece.

Conservation

Together with other situated near Kalymnos islands Telendos was the Natura 2000 network of the European Union as GR 4210019 Kalymnos ' islets: Epano, Nera, Sari and Telendos ( Νησίδες Καλύμνου: Επάνω, Νερά, Σάρι και Τέλενδος ) and integrated parts of them at the same time as an IBA ( " Important Bird Area " ) zone GR 162 North and east Kalymnos, Telendos, and Kalolimnos islands and islets ( Βόρεια και ανατολική Κάλυμνος, Τέλενδος, Καλόλιμνος και νησίδες ) classified.
