John Ambrose Fleming, inventor of the electron tube diode worked as a consultant for Marconi Company. Henry Joseph Round at Marconi improved the high frequency gain of the triode. 1912, the company received an order from the British government for the construction of radio stations in the far-flung British Empire. This point there was a political Marconi scandal, as members of the government were accused of having profited from stock transactions by the steep increase in price. The company in 1946 by English Electric ( "EE" ) has been adopted. 1968 merged with EE General Electric Company ( GEC, not to be confused with General Electric).

Growth and decline

After RELTEC Corporation and Fore Systems (Pittsburgh, USA) was founded in 1999, acquired, possessed a good position in the North American market for routers and switches. With assets of GPT (Coventry, England), Marconi SpA (Genoa, Italy) and Bosch Telecom ( Backnang, Germany ), a new large corporation was formed. After a period of restructuring, resulting in the defense business was sold to British Aerospace, the company was changed to Marconi in 1999.

The purchase price for the acquired companies, which were only partly supported by the arms deals were sold as part of the dotcom bubble far away from economic reason. In May 2002, the company laid open for the past fiscal year, a loss of 9.1 billion euros. It was at that time the largest loss of a company in British history. A bankruptcy could be averted by restructuring measures, in which the shareholders in favor of the lending banks were watered down. In the following years the company succeeded indeed to reduce the losses, but it never came despite the massive staff cuts into the profit zone.

Marconi could only develop a few new products and suffered a permanent massive decline in orders. As Marconi with the major customers, BT Group, which no longer renewed its supply contracts after, also lost its home market, it became a takeover candidate. On 25 October 2005 competitor Ericsson announced for 1.8 billion euros to acquire Marconi and to take over the majority of the business. The acquisition was completed retrospectively from 1 January 2006 on 23 January 2006. The name Marconi remains within Ericsson as a brand.
