Telmessos

Telmessus ( Lycian Telebehi; Greek Τελμησσός, rarely with Iotazismus also Telmissus ) located was an ancient city in Lycia on the border with Caria. The place was located on the site of today's Fethiye in Turkey.

Since the 5th century BC Telmessus was a Lycian Dynastenresidenz evidenced by the archaeological and epigraphic finds. From about 420 BC, it came under the domination of Xanthos, about 360 under the Persian satrapy as part of Lycia. In the Hellenistic period the membership of Telmessus changed hands several times until it as an autonomous polis by 80 BC joined the Lycian Federation. With the establishment of the province of Lycia et Pamphylia in AD 43 Telmessus was formally part of the Roman Empire. In late antiquity the city, which was temporarily named Anastasioupolis, seat of a bishop, who was directly subordinate to the Metropolitan of Myra was. In the Diocese of the titular Telmissus the Roman Catholic Church is declining.

Today especially numerous rock tombs, the Acropolis with an attachment from the Middle Ages and a theater to see.

Even in ancient times Telmessus was often confused with Telmissus in Caria, the seat of a famous sanctuary of Apollo.
