Maccullochella peelii

The family of cod perch ( Percichthyidae ) consists of 11 genera 30 species. You live in Australia, Chile and Argentina ( Percichthys ) and East Asia ( Coreoperca, Siniperca ) in fresh water, rarely in brackish water.

Features

The animals have a typical shape with perch coalesced dorsal fins, which can be separated by an incision. Their scales are comb scales, with simple needle-like spines on the rear end or secondary roundhouse.

  • Vertebrae 25-36 (40-50 in Gadopsis )

Cod perch are 6 centimeters to 1.8 meters long. Some species are threatened with extinction.

According to some scholars, the Asian genera Coreoperca and Siniperca into its own family, the Sinipercidae should be provided. Some authors, however, the Chilean Südbarsche ( Percilia ) are placed in the family.

Fossil record

With Percichthys antiquus and Santosius antiquus from the Miocene of Taubaté (Brazil), and a representative of the genus Macquaria from the Eocene of Queensland are represented Percichthyidae the fossil.
