Temple Neuf

The Temple Neuf ( New Church German ) is a five-aisled Lutheran Church in Strasbourg, which rises since 1877 in place of a previous medieval building near the Cathedral.

History

It was built 1874-1877 in neo-Romanesque style by architect Émile Salomon after 1872 submitted plans and equipped in its completion with a large organ by Joseph Merklin.

Predecessor of Temple Neufs was the former Dominican Church, after the cathedral with 85 meters second longest Gothic church building in the city. Since the Reformation, it served as a Protestant church (John Calvin had preached at this church and held services. ) Separate choir and the adjoining monastery since the French Revolution as the city library and archive. There, among others, the valuable collection of medieval manuscripts was preserved ( including the Hortus Deliciarum ), which was destroyed during the Franco-German War by Prussian artillery fire. After the demolition of the ruins of a competition in 1871 already announced for the new building, where there is also Gottfried Semper involved.

The medieval stained glass windows of the Dominican church, a total of 292 fields were already purchased in 1832 by the Church of Our Lady Foundation ( Fondation de l' Oeuvre Notre Dame ) and 1833 taken out. In 1854 they were incorporated in part (102 fields) in the Lawrence Chapel and at other points of the Cathedral. More stained glass windows from the Dominican church are exhibited in the Musée de l' Oeuvre Notre Dame and store it in its bearings.

Equipment

, In today's church next quality full historicist equipment ( chandelier, baptismal font, pulpit ... ) to visit also received grave monuments from the earlier building: the grave plates of Johannes Tauler († 1361 ) and a bishop Ortwein († 1514 ) and two works from the hand of Landolin impotence.

The organ was built in 1877 by Joseph Merklin after the historic Silbermann organ was completely destroyed during the bombing of 1870. The present instrument is in character Franco- romantic. It has 40 stops on three manuals and pedal.
