Temple of Isthmia

Today's Isthmia ( Greek: Ισθμια ) is located on the Peloponnese (Greece ) at the point on the Isthmus of Corinth, where there was the sanctuary in ancient times, at the Isthmian Games ( ancient Greek Ἰσθμιάδες, Isthmiades ) were held.

Mainly Poseidon was worshiped in this sanctuary. Earliest evidence for a cult date back to the 11th century BC. 196 BC the Roman general Gaius Flaminius here during the Games, the freedom of Greece proclaim.

Today not much is visible from the sanctuary. Worth mentioning is the sanctuary built by Emperor Hadrian of Palaemon, a rotunda, was depicted riding on the Palaimon on a dolphin. From this building the foundations are still visible. The same applies to the approximately 465 BC, built the temple of Poseidon, a Peripteros where Herod Atticus had erected a monumental group of Poseidon and Amphitrite. Of particular interest is the starting system of the stadium, which (as in Nemea ) consisted of wooden pegs on which cross beams were fixed, which could be lowered with a cable to simultaneously release the track for all runners. Well worth seeing the museum is ( with good labels).
