Temple tube station

Temple is an underground station of the London Underground in the City of Westminster. It is located in the Travelcard Zone 1 on the north bank of the Thames. In 2011, 9.99 million passengers used the area served by the Circle Line and the District Line station.

The station name is derived from the nearby Temple Church, the former main church of the Knights Templar in England. Nearby are also the Fleet Street, The Inns of Court ( Middle Temple, Inner Temple, Gray 's Inn and Lincoln 's Inn ), the Royal Courts of Justice and the Bush House.

The opening of the station took place on May 30, 1870 by the Metropolitan District Railway, the predecessor of today's District Line. Construction of the station was connected with the construction of the Thames Embankment. On May 17, 1938, a train on the Circle Line went on a standing on the District line, because he ran a stop signal. During an accident, six people were killed and 45 others were injured.
