2,2,6,6- tetramethylpiperidinyloxyl (TEMPO ) is a stabilized free radical, which can be used as the oxidant. It is thermodynamically not stable, but stirred his relatively high persistence of substituents ago, which affect the life span by steric effects. The substituents are located adjacent to the radical electron, so that it has an average life span of a minute in oxygen-free solution.

Use

TEMPO place in the nitroxide -mediated polymerization ( NMP) application. This is a controlled radical polymerization (CRP), and allows high molar masses of the polymers, as well as the synthesis of block copolymers. In addition, it can serve as a spin label in electron spin resonance experiment.

Furthermore, it is as an oxidation catalyst together with a suitable Kooxidator ( oft. sodium hypochlorite) used in the organic chemistry ( Anelli oxidation).
