Temporal muscle

The temporalis muscle (Latin for temporalis muscle ) is a skeletal muscle and belongs to the group of muscles of mastication.

Function

The temporal muscle raises the lower jaw, thereby closing the jaws. In addition, pull his dorsal ( rear ) fibers back the lower jaw and thus act antagonistically to the lateral pterygoid muscle. The innervation is done by Nervi temporal profundi from the mandibular nerve, the third major branch of the trigeminal nerve, ie, the fifth cranial nerve.
