Temporary capital of Lithuania

Main Lithuanian cities were:

Past and present

Kernavė and Trakai were the earliest rule places the Lithuanian Grand Duke.

Kernavė is held as the seat of the first and only King of Lithuania Mindaugas. Today it is a place of many mounds ( Piliakalnis ) with impressive archaeological finds an attractive tourist center.

Trakai is famous for its reconstructed Wasserburg. Since Vytautas times Trakai was a place of settlement for the Karaites, Tartars, a Jewish sect.

Vilnius was founded according to legend, after the Grand Duke Gediminas had dreamed of a wolf on the mountain and this was by Lizdeika to understand as a sign of the Baltic gods for the establishment of a new Lithuanian capital. Documented it was first mentioned in 1323. Vilnius has long been the Lithuanian center of power. It has a large multi-ethnic past. Today Vilnius is considered the intellectual and cultural center of today's Lithuania.

Kaunas was in the interwar period "temporary capital ", while Vilnius was administered Polish ( Lithuanian-Polish relations have not been without tension ). So Kaunas was experienced as litauischste city - conservative, patriotic and Vytautas city. In the center of power of the First Republic, there are many representative buildings of the 1930s. Kaunas is considered as a counterpart to the medieval Hanseatic town center and is strongly influenced culturally ( the city with museums, for example, a collection of thousands of devils).

The spiritual and cultural center of today's Lithuania is without doubt again the capital Vilnius. It had been the Lithuanian center of power for a long time. Today Vilnius is considered as a European city and economic center of Lithuania: In the district of Vilnius, the proportion of foreign investment about 60%, the GDP is about 30 % higher than the average GDP of the Lithuanian districts ( GDP is in the city of Vilnius on 4 000 LTL or 1200 euro per capita).
