Temppeliaukio Church

The Temppeliaukio Church (Finnish Temppeliaukion kirkko, Min. Tempelplatsens kyrka ) east of the cemetery Hietaniemi is a modern rock church in the district of Etu - Töölö the Finnish capital Helsinki, about a kilometer away from the station. It is considered an outstanding example of Finnish architecture of the 1960s, and is attributable to the late Expressionism.

The church was designed by architects ( and brothers ) Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen planned and completed in 1969. It was built into a granite rock, but daylight comes in through the copper roof with 180 windows. The five to eight meters high church walls are made of rough-hewn rock. The Church has to the top of the dome has a height of 13 m.

Besides the use for worship of the Protestant parish of Taivallahti ( Taivallahden seurakunta ) the church is used regularly for concerts and is a tourist attraction ( 500,000 visitors annually ).
