The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA ) is an independent government organization in the United States, founded on May 18, 1933, the reign of President Franklin D. Roosevelt as part of his New Deal program. Their basic idea was, according to Roosevelt, "a corporation clothed with the power of government but possessed of the flexibility and initiative of private enterprise" ( " a corporation with government powers but influenced by the flexibility and determination of a private company ").

The main task of the TVA is the management of hydroelectric and flow control facilities on the Tennessee River, in addition, it operates as the largest energy producer in the U.S. today, many coal and nuclear power plants. The hydroelectric power plants include inter alia the Raccoon Mountain pumped storage plant. Seat of authority is Knoxville, Tennessee.
