Tepoto (North)

Tepoto North and Te Poto, Toho or Pukapoto is an atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago Upscale in French Polynesia. Napuka, 16 km south-east, lies the island the next. Tepoto North reached a stretch of 2.6 km long by 800 m wide. To avoid confusion with a namesake island, the 400 km south distant Tepoto Sud, was awarded the island the addition Nord. The atoll is one of the Îles du désappointement, administratively to the municipality Napuka.

History

Tepoto North was discovered in 1519 by Ferdinand Magellan, who could find on the island and on the neighboring atoll Napuka no water for his onward journey. Thus, the two arid islands got their European name "islands of disappointment ."

Mid-19th century was visited by an American research expedition under Charles Wilkes, the atoll.

Tehekega 's most important town of the island, which is inhabited almost exclusively by Polynesians.
