Teramo

Teramo [ tɛramo ] ( in ancient Interamna Praetuttiorum ) is the capital of the Italian province of Teramo in the Abruzzo region. The town has 54,377 inhabitants in an area of 151 km ². It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Teramo - Atri and location of the University of Teramo.

Geography

Teramo is located in a hilly countryside, not far from the mountain massif of the Gran Sasso, between the rivers Tordino and Vezzola.

The city center is the Corso San Giorgio; it connects the two main squares, Piazza Garibaldi, the main public transport hub, and Martyrs Piazza della Libertà, which is often used as a pedestrian area and front of the cathedral for various events. History

The city was the capital of the Italic people of the Praetuttii. In the year 290 BC, five years after the Battle of Sentinum, it was conquered by the Roman consul Manius Curius Dentatus. After 268 BC the Praetuttii Roman citizens and their city were given the Latin name Interamna, which means " between two rivers "; because the urban area is crossed by the two rivers Vezzola and Tordino. After the Social War ( 91-88 BC) was a Roman municipium Interamna; in sullanischer time also a Colonia was established.

During the Roman Empire Teramo was a thriving city, but then fell in the Middle Ages and recovered only partially after the unification of Italy in 1861 ( Risorgimento ).

Attractions

Under a glass floor in the cathedral remains of the oldest sacral building of the city can be seen. In the 6th century a church called S.
